Karuna Trust Donates Books to Dhamma School Libraries
Last year, Karuna Trust started libraries in all the 22 Dhamma schools in Neluwa DS division. But this was not 100% successful because some head priests do not allow the students to take home the books and they do not have sufficient time to read the books while at school. This year, the trust decided to start a Buddhist and children’s book sections in school libraries. Here the school principals are responsible for the books that they receive and also we get an official receipt for the books that we donate. Students are allowed to take home the books.
In all urban schools there are libraries and librarians. But in the poor rural schools there are one or two old library cupboards in the libraries and that also full up with old registers and other rubbish. There are few books which have been donated by either Room to Read or some other missionary organizations. This year we have selected the schools in Tawalama DS division for our library project. To start with we have selected six schools and donated one library cupboard to each of these schools. Each cupboard costs Rs. 16,500.00 and the cost was born by the Sri Lanka United National Association of Canada. Karuna Trust gave books worth Rs.50,000.00 to each of these six schools. These books consisted of Buddhist books, children’s folk stories and biographies.
There are 17 schools in this division and we are planning to donate library cupboards and books to the other 11 libraries too. Contributions to this worthy project is highly appreciated. Even used books will be accepted. Books can be handover to Casa Serena, No.122 Havelock Road, Colombo 05. (Just opposite Police Head Quarters)
