Sri Lankan student wins 'River of Words' art competition
Ten year old Sasani Navoda Wickramatunga, a student of Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo, has won this year's River of Words International Art competition. Sasani's entry -- 'Near the River in the Afternoon' was adjudged the winner in the International category.
The contest open to any child in the world from ages 5 to19 is held in affiliation with The Library of Congress Center for the book River of Words. The annual competition's theme is watersheds and conservation. Participants in the U.S. and from around the world submit poetry and art on the theme of watersheds. Sasani's achievement carries greater significance as only one prize is awarded for international participants in both art and poetry. Four other grand prizes are awarded to U.S. participants.
The Grand Prize and International winners win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC to attend the RoW Award Ceremony at The Library of Congress. Sasani, a resident of Rajagiriya is a student of Hasanthi Sarada Bogahawatta at the Sampath Rekha International Art Academy.
