1942  British warship HMS Tenedos was sunk in harbour at Colombo, Ceylon by Japanese carrier bombers. HMS Cornwall and HMS Dorsetshire were sunk in the Indian Ocean south west of Ceylon, also by Japanese carrier divebombers. 190 men were lost from 'Cornwall' and 234 from 'Dorsetshire'.

1942  Jailed Lanka Sama Samaja Party leaders Colvin R. de Silva, Philip Gunawardena, N. M. Perera, and Edmund Samarakkody escaped from prison aided by one of their guards during the only air raid that the Japanese ever made on Colombo. De Silva, Gunawardena and Perera crossed over to India.

1962  The creator of Sri Lanka's national anthem, artist, singer, songwriter, and composer Ananda Samarakone, committed suicide at the age of 51. His songs such as Podimal Ethano, Asay Madura Siri Saru Sara Kethay continue to be popular and re-done over half a century later in the Sri Lankan music scene.

1971  Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), a marxist youth outfit lead by Rohana Wijeweera launched a violent campaign to overthrow the government. Within months, the government suppressed the youth revolution and jailed its leaders.
