1881  R. L. Spittel, the author of several popular novels about the Veddas in Sri Lanka was born. Dr. Spittel’s studies of the Vedda’s provide a rare but valuable window to the aboriginal culture of Sri Lanka.

1950  The Royal Ceylon Navy was established. In 1972, the name was changed to Sri Lanka Navy with the new Constitution of the Republic.

1995  A Sri Lanka Airforce Antonov 32 aircraft flying from Colombo to Ratmalana crashed in the sea due to instrument problems. All 75 passengers on board were killed.
